Two-step sign-in
After your password, Lessonsmith asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. Someone who learns your password still can't get in. Setting up on the same phone you use Lessonsmith on? That works too: no scanning needed.

2 Set up your authenticator app
- Get an app. Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or a password manager such as 1Password all work. Use the app your school recommends if it has one.
- Scan the code with the app on your phone (choose "Add account", then "Scan a QR code"). Can't scan? Choose "Enter a setup key" and type the key under the code.
- Type the 6-digit code the app shows, then press Turn on.
- Get an app on this phone: Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator (free in your app store). On an iPhone, the built-in Passwords app works too.
- Tap "Add to my authenticator app". Your app opens and adds Lessonsmith. Nothing happened? Tap Copy setup key, open your app, choose "Enter a setup key" and paste it.
- Come back here, paste or type the 6-digit code, and press Turn on. Your setup is kept if you switch apps.
3 Save your recovery codes
If you lose your phone, each of these codes lets you sign in once. Keep them somewhere safe, away from your phone: printed and locked away, or in your school's password manager. This is the only time we show them.
? Good to know
Your phone's clock
Codes change every 30 seconds and depend on the time. If codes keep failing, set your phone's date and time to update automatically.
New phone?
Sign in with a code from your old phone or a recovery code, then come back here and choose Move to a new phone.
Locked out?
Use a recovery code. If you have none left, your school admin or Lessonsmith support can help after checking it's really you.
What we keep
The app's secret is stored encrypted, with the key kept apart from our database. Recovery codes are stored scrambled (hashed), like passwords.
